SARDINE FACTORY NEPTUN

The rise of the communist fish industry in the first half of the 20th century left several interesting ruins within the city’s tissues. The first industrial facilities in Dalmatia were built in Komiza, where salted or roasted sardines and other blue fish were sought after. The women who worked at the factories were called ‘tobakine’; Before the factory in Komiza on the eastern Adriatic coast there was only a tobacco factory in Rovinj, so the “tobakina” was synonymous with the one that works in the factory. These women often came to Vis from other parts of Dalmatia and the Dalmatian Zagora, thus improving the demographic and ‘blood’ image of Komiža. After World War II, due to several reasons, production declines, and fish processing is experiencing a crisis. Factory owners flee to emigration, and only the factory ‘Neptune’ is left to work, now organized according to the principles of self-managing socialism.
